STNA board elections happened at the last general meeting on Thursday, May 16th from 7-8:30 at Trinity Fellowship Church. Two new residents are joining the STNA membership:

Secretary: Kelly Horsford

Southeast Uplift Representative: Eric Lozano

South Tabor Clean Up a SUCCESS

Thanks to all who came out to help with the South Tabor Clean Up. Nearly 100 vehicles passed through the parking lot–not bad for a change of location and date.

Thanks to all the volunteers and community partners who helped make this event a great success. A special thanks to Ben Olsen for coordinating a great event.

Information Kiosks Need Homes!

We’re looking for safe hosts for three of the STNA information kiosks. Ideal candidates will be located no further than one block north or south of Woodward St between 75th and 80th avenues. Hosts must be willing to dig a hole for a 4×4 mounting post and help install the kiosk, as well one other, and must be willing to keep the kiosk stocked with newsletters throughout the year.

Join the South Tabor Welcome Committee

Looking for an easy and rewarding way to give back to your neighborhood? Consider joining the Welcome Committee and make new neighbors feel right at home. Just an hour a month can build a ton of community and strengthen cohesion of South Tabor.

Volunteers are especially needed to deliver goodies close to 52nd Ave and 82nd Ave.

Movie in the Park:The Adventures of Tintin

The 3rd Annual Movie in the Park date is set for Saturday, August 10th on the green at Warner Pacific College. A collaboration between City of Portland Parks & Recreation Department, Mount Tabor Neighborhood Association and South Tabor Neighborhood Association, this family-friendly event is always a crowd pleaser. South Tabor Unveils New Identity

It’s official: South Tabor has a new look. Neighborhood resident, and long time graphic designer Nicolle Mecha, submitted the winning entry in November. The STNA Communications Committee refined the look and feel of the logo over several weeks, with an official unveiling last month.

“I’m hoping the logo creates unity and awareness of South Tabor as a community.”- Nicolle Mecha

Look for the new logo on signs and publications, and purchase goodies with the new logo to benefit STNA at a Cafe Press fundraising site, coming soon!

Jade District in Formative Stages

Organizers from around the city are working hard to make the Jade District (SE 82nd between Division and Holgate) the next “gem in Portland’s crown”. Although discussions and ideas are in early stages, there are high hopes for cultural and infrastructure revitalization that will benefit the entire community.

Concerned About Crime? Join the Crimewatch Movement

Long time neighborhood resident, Duane Hanson, has first hand experience with crime in the neighborhood. Perhaps a bit too much. In an effort to help make South Tabor a safer place to live, work and play, Duane has stepped up to serve as a Crimewatch Block Captain close to home–and urges residents from other parts of South Tabor to do the same. Below is his story.

Our home is on a corner. We have a large hedge along one side. Over the eight plus years I’ve been here, we’ve endured at least six incidents of theft, including bike theft, car prowl(s), roofing material theft, late-night fruit tree ‘harvests’, a garage break-in, and one incident where thieves used a cordless saw to remove the entire exhaust system from our 4X4…which was parked on our lawn!

I’m certain that owning large dogs is all that has saved our house from being robbed.

I don’t wish to be mad, nor afraid. To this end, I’ve started a “Crimewatch” with several nearby neighbors. It’s basically a phone tree, which allows neighobrs to touch base in the event that suspicious activities/person(s) are observed near each others property. A simple phone tree can be a mighty nice tool.

Funding for “Crimewatch” signs for Duane to post near his home has been approved. He will also be available to provide additional information at the “National Night Out” this coming August 2013. To connect with Duane directly, email crimebuster@southtabor.org.

South Tabor In Need of Volunteers

The South Tabor Neighborhood Association is made up of resident volunteers who work tirelessly to improve livability within our boundaries. Board members dedicate hours of time each month to ensure information is shared, safety is addressed and activities benefiting the community are implemented.

There are many exciting things happening in South Tabor right now, and we’re looking to grow our work committees, so that neighborhood projects and activities can be successfully completed. We need volunteers to help with many of the tasks, below:

–Creation and management of a hard-copy and electronic newsletter

–Construction of neighborhood kiosks/bulletins to share information

–Development and coordination of fundraising activities

–Flier distribution

–Assembly and delivery of new neighbor welcome baskets

–Participation and contribution toward the development of the South Tabor Community Plan

–Advocacy for a safer Division street

–Outreach/education at community events

–Day-of volunteering for the Spring Clean Up, Harvest Festival and South Tabor Garden Walk

–Pancake Breakfast volunteers

–Data entry

–Anything else you may have to offer!
